How To Deal With Ugly Comments Online

Have you ever had one of these? I bet if you have made any type of post, email, or online video, you have.

What I am talking of, is the ugly comments people leave. Of course it’s not everyone, but it does seem there is always that one person who wants to spit out some ugly remark, call you names, and throw their negativity at you. So today, I want to explain the best way to deal with these people, and how to react when they want to slam the hammer down on you.

WHY DO THEY EVEN BOTHER LEAVING A COMMENT?

To understand more on how to deal with this type of aggravation, you need to step into their shoes for just a bit.

The reason they leave nasty comments, is usually because of how they feel about themselves. They like to be the victim, the person who the world was against, and they see you as the lucky one that has not had the problems they had to endure. Of course we know this is not true, everyone has issues and problems. The difference is how we handle the issues.

They really just want to bring you down to their level. Make you feel small like themselves. When they see someone even trying to better their lives, they want to stop it. So that is the reason the ugly comments come. It is their attempt to slow you down, hurt you, and make you feel like them (or an attempt to do it).

The real question many may ask is “If you don’t like it, why even waste time leaving a comment”. Now you know. It is worth their effort to hurt someone else, because that’s how they feel better about themselves.

HOW DO I REACT TO AN UGLY COMMENT?

There is two choices you can make when you have this issue occur.

First, is do nothing. Continue on, delete the comment, or ignore it. See it for what it really is, good news for you. If people are leaving comments, you are getting other’s attention. This is what you needed anyway. So congrats for doing what you needed to do, and remember these loosers come with it.

Second choice is to reply back. This may cause the person to get what he/she wants, which is an argument, so be sure to reply in a non-aggressive way. Sometimes, you can also fight back with letting them know you are much better than they are behaving. Depending on what the comment is, would depend on the reply. Most of the time I do not reply back, just continue with my day as I don’t have time to play with them. But, the choice is yours.

THE OVERALL OF THE UGLY COMMENTS

When building a business, you will get these comments a lot. It is part of the challenge, and part of business. Those who go as low as to leave ugly comments to others, are hoping to stop others from finding happiness. So if you are holding back promoting, making a video, or anything that can help you, all because of ugly comments, then know they have successfully defeated you.

I like your post on how to deal with ugly comments. I have four websites that I have built and I have received my fair share of comments, both good and ugly ones. The first thing I do is to make sure to never take it personally. That can be hard for many people. I once got an ugly comment that was very aggressive. I did not delete it. Instead, I replied with a very pleasant and kind tone of voice. I took the high road and thanked the commenter for his comment and then very carefully worded a very detailed rebuttal to their ugly comment. That shows your readers how mature and professional you are.

Yes Steph, it does. I am not sure why anyone would take time to leave a nasty comment unless their intentions are to hurt someone else. It only hurts them more when it doesn’t effect us.

That’s right Sharon. It’s usually because they don’t like the truth, so they want to change it.

Delete it and move on. When you get defensive and upset the other person wins. That is what they want to happen. I try to avoid the drama and negativity at all costs. Just my two cents.

That would be the best way to go about it. And fastest. I do believe the ugly comments are from people who have a negative agenda behind the remark. If I disagree with someone, I just won’t leave any comments. Thanks for sharing that Chuck!
